Our Work

The College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong was established on 25th October 1994. We are one of the fifteen Colleges of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. The College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong is a statutory body and is responsible for organizing, monitoring, assessing, and accrediting all ophthalmological specialist training in Hong Kong. The College also oversees mandatory continuous medical education and continuous professional development for all fellows to ensure that all ophthalmologists practicing in Hong Kong are up to date with the latest research and the best practices in ophthalmology.

As of today, we have over 357 Fellows and 92 Trainees serving in different sectors of medical services in Hong Kong including the private sector, the public service (Hospital Authority), and the two Universities. We have a comprehensive, full-time structured training program in Training Centers accredited by the College across Hong Kong. All trainees in ophthalmology must first be fully registered medical doctors, who are then admitted into the program, which spans a minimum of 6 years. The training curriculum includes intensive clinical training, surgical skills and research development. All trainees are also required to pass at least 4 professional examinations during their 6 years of ophthalmic training. Most importantly, the College puts a strong emphasis on ethical and moral values in the practice of medicine, and all our trainees are taught to uphold these values throughout their training program.

In addition to safeguarding clinical standards, our College strives to improve the ocular health of our society and fight preventable blindness through promotion of excellence in ophthalmic education and training, support of research in ophthalmology, and providing guidance and advices on issues related to ophthalmology to the HKSAR government and relevant bodies.

Over the years, our College has worked closely with the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, the Hospital Authority, the two local Medical Schools, Hong Kong Medical Association, Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society, Hong Kong Association of Private Eye Surgeons and other international professional institutions in various professional educational programs for the further advancement in eye care. In order to raise our public awareness and understanding of common and important eye diseases, we hold regular public educational programs in conjunction with Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society. We advise policymakers on the appropriate standard of eye care, and how ophthalmologists can effectively lead the team of different ophthalmic allied health professionals to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective eye care. We serve to advise both healthcare professionals and our public on matters of public interest concerning ophthalmic care and ocular health.
