Membership

Membership of the College will include:

  • Fellows (including Founding Fellows and Honorary Fellows);
  • Associate Fellows;
  • Ordinary Members;
  • Associate Members; and
  • Affiliates.

1. Fellows

  1. The Founding Fellows of the College shall be those registered medical practitioners in Hong Kong who at Incorporation were:
    1. Fellows of any one of the British Royal Colleges of Surgeons (Ophthalmology); or
    2. Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Ophthalmology); or
    3. Fellows of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK); or
    4. Fellows of the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists; or
    5. Diplomates of the American Board of Ophthalmology; or
    6. Medical practitioners who hold Diploma in Ophthalmology of a British Royal College of Surgeons or the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland on or before 30th June 1982; or
    7. Medical practitioners who have at least 25 years independent full time practice in the field of ophthalmology of quality acceptable to the Council;

    who on or before the date of the first Extraordinary General Meeting of the College apply to the College to be elected as Founding Fellows and pay the first annual membership fee fixed by the Council.

  2. Fellows shall be those registered medical practitioners in Hong Kong who upon written application to and approval by the Council by a simple majority and upon payment of the prescribed fees and have
    1. passed the Intermediate and Exit Examination/Assessment of the College; or
    2. passed an Exit Examination/Assessment prescribed by the Council of the College and submitted evidence of holding the ophthalmological qualifications by examination recognised by the Council.
  3. Honorary Fellows, to be appointed by the Council at their discretion, shall be those persons who have made contribution to the field of ophthalmology or to the College.

2. Associate Fellows

Associate Fellows shall be those registered medical practitioners in Hong Kong who apply to and are accepted by the Council upon payment of the prescribed fees and have

  1. passed the Intermediate Examination of the College; or
  2. passed any of the following ophthalmological examinations:
    1. Membership Examination in ophthalmology of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh; or
    2. Membership Examination of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) on or after 1st January 1997; or
  3. submitted evidence of holding the ophthalmological qualifications by examination recognised by the Council.

3. Ordinary Members

Ordinary Members shall be those registered medical practitioners in Hong Kong who apply to and are accepted by the Council upon payment of the prescribed fees and hold:

  1. the Diploma in Ophthalmology of a British Royal College of Surgeons, of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, or of the College of Ophthalmologists (UK); or
  2. the Membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) obtained before 1st January 1997.

4. Associate Members

Associate Members shall be:

  1. those registered medical practitioners in Hong Kong who are not eligible to be Fellows or Members but who are undergoing a training in ophthalmology of a type and at a place approved by the Council; or
  2. those persons approved and admitted by the Council who hold medical or post-graduate qualifications in basic sciences or related fields of ophthalmology approved by the Council.

upon application to and are accepted by the Council and upon payment of the prescribed fees.

5. Affiliates

Those persons approved and admitted by the Council who practise in the allied fields of ophthalmology:-

  1. nurses;
  2. optometrists;
  3. orthoptists; or
  4. ophthalmic assistants.
